Principles of Data Management

Course Information - Topics

• Database System Architecture: ANSI/SPARC Architecture; data abstraction; external, conceptual, and internal schemata; data independence; data definition and data manipulation languages.
• Data models: Entity-relationship and relational data models; data structures, integrity constraints, and operations for each data model; relational query languages: SQL, algebra, calculus.
• Theory of database design: Functional dependencies; normal forms; dependency preservation; information loss.
• Query Optimization: Equivalence of expressions, algebraic manipulation; optimization of selections and joins.
• Storage Strategies: Indices, B-trees, hashing. Advanced access methods: advanced hashing and multi-key access methods
• Transaction Processing: Recovery and concurrency control.
• Object-oriented and object-relational data model.
• Parallel and Distributed Databases.
• Multimedia databases, queries by content.
• Data mining, data warehousing, and rule discovery.
• Other topics: Mobile databases; Web databases; Fractals in databases. Future directions.

Prerequisites

• CIS551 (Programming Techniques) and CIS552 (Operating Systems). If you have not taken these courses, please see me asap.

Project

• The course load involves a project in Oracle/MSAccess/Postgresql. Through this project you will get hands-on experience, designing and implementing an application on a database system. For extra credit there will be a second project. The goal of the second project is to give students the opportunity to tackle a large, interesting problem, which may lead to a publication.

Presentations

• Each student will make a 15-20 minute presentation of a research paper to the rest of the class. There will be a list of papers to choose from. Please send me an email to sign up for a presentation.

Exams, Project and Grading

• Homeworks and class participation: 10%
• Project: 30%
• Presentation: 10%
• Midterm: 20%
• Final: 30%

  Late Policy: The project parts and homework assignments are due in class, on the specified due date. No late submissions will be accepted. For fairness, this policy will be strictly enforced.

  Exams: All aids are allowed (open books, open notes, calculators, etc).

Important Dates

• First class: January 17.
• Last day to drop the course (tuition refund available): January 30.
• Last day to withdraw (no refund): March 27.
• Spring break: March 5-12.
• Last Class: April 25.

Honor Code

• All work submitted for credit must be your own.
• You may discuss the homework problems with your classmates, the teaching assistant, and the instructor. You must acknowledge the people with whom you discussed your work, and you must write up your own solutions and code. Any written sources (apart from the text) used must also be acknowledged; however, you may not consult any solutions from previous years' assignments whether they are student or faculty generated.
• Plagiarism will be handled with severe measures.
• Please ask if you have any questions about the Honor Code. Violations of the honor code will be treated seriously. Please check the Temple University policy on Plagiarism and Academic Cheating.
