Personal opinion on automation: It is inevitable, but we need to make sure that those replaced do not end up in dire straights by doing so. There are more than one way to look at automation: 1) The captalist will see it as a way to replace unreliable/underperforming human workers or 2) It will free people from the mundane work that is either too dangerous or tedious that people will not want to do it themselves. There are many points in between, as well.

I would recommend everyone to read a SciFi story that describes both points of view from the non-buisiness owner veiw ( because how many of us are or can be without resources ). It is named Manna. It is not a recent story, It is not perfect, either.

I do not think we need to have an either or situation, as in the story. But we need to, as a society, need to talk about this. And I would like the people on the capitalist side of the conversation to think about what if they themselves, or their kids, end up in the no-resource and no job catagory. It is not necessarily an issue of "pick yourself up from your own bootstraps" if literally there are no jobs and no way to get the training to get a new one.

We will soon be able to allow everyone the opertunity to get the time and access to education and resources, at least in a virtual world, to learn and discover whatever they want. And this will allow all those who are interested to learn how things really do work and to contribute to new ways to look at and improve it. Not everyone will be interested in playing video games or watch TV if they are out of work. There is only so much anyone can do this until it is not satisfying to them. From there they will turn back to the real world.

Not everyone who can contribute to a volume of knowledge needs a college degree, but it would still help to inform them what has been tried and why we currently think things are as they are. Progress can come people who are untrained, but even more can come from people who are. And the more people know of many different fields will allow us to make even better connections to what currently may seem as completely unrelated fields.
