Overview
1. Origin
computer for numerical calculation, non-numerical computation --- symbol manipulation, Turing machine
Turing: imitation game, McCulloch-Pitts: artificial neuron, Wiener: cybernetics
Dartmouth Conference Proposal (1956), Brief History of Artificial Intelligence
2. Perspectives
The general goal of AI: to build intelligent machines. As science (related to cognitive science) and engineering.
Three levels of a complete AI project: (1) theory, (2) model, (3) implementation
Similar to the human mind in terms of structure, behavior, capability, function, or principle. They are different goals!
Mainstream view: "intelligent agent":
- common medium: knowledge
- core cognitive facilicies: search, reasoning, learning
- interface: (computer and human) language, sensorimotor
3. Status
IJCAI-07, AAAI-06, AI@50
